What will change for suites in June of 2020?

All secondary and backyard suites must be registered on Calgary’s legal suite registry by June 2020. Afterwards, the City will reinstate fees for the development permit ($471) and suite registry ($232).

What is the secondary suite registry?

It is an online, readily available list establishes legal and safe secondary suites in the City of Calgary. These registered suites are hence registered which meet Alberta’s Safety Codes Act, it’s governing codes and regulations.

What is the goal of the registry?

The registry is designed to raise awareness with Calgarians about the importance of public life/safety, and such features of a legal/approved secondary suite. Approved and registered suites meet the intent of the Alberta Building Code and meet the minimum building requirements for suites.

What penalties can one face for an unsafe suite?

Safety is always paramount under the Safety Codes Act for Albertans. Non-conforming suites don’t meet the minimum safety standards in force and owners of such suites can be subject to fines and heavy penalties under the Safety Codes Act.
